Merchant account
What is a merchant account ?
When a customer buys from your website using credit card, the money has to
be deposited into your account. You need a special account for this
generally known as a merchant account.
Why do I need a merchant account ?
Studies have shown that that merchants accounts can increase your sales by 70%
or more ! Also, customers are more willing to purchase higher cost goods using
a payment method that offers them repayment flexibility. It is projected that by
2002, credit card transactions will account for 98% of Internet sales, equaling
$55.6 billion!
Do I need a business account to get a merchant account ?
Some MSP's (Merchant Service Providers) require you to have a business checking
account. This is specially true if your company is a corporation, partnership,
LLC, etc. If you are a Sole Proprietor, some banks will allow you to add your
“DBA” (doing business as) name to your personal checking account.
Where do I go to get a merchant account ?
Your best bet (possibly the most economical) is to contact your own bank first.
There are plenty of other companies that can provide you with a merchant
account.
