Finding your own super web designer
The other day I saw an ad on Craigslist that read like this.
Immediate position for a super web designer.
Must know
- Expert ASP.NET (both C# and VB.NET)
- Expert Java, J2EE
- Expert PHP and MySQL (at least 5 years experience)
- HTML5 and XHTML
- Advanced jQuery
- At least 5 years of Photoshop
- CSS, CSS2, CSS3
- Adobe Golive
- Object Oriented Programming, Struts, Hibernate, Oracle
$10/hour
OK, so what's wrong with the ad above?
#1. There are a very few people who know ASP.NET, PHP and Java at the same time.
After 16 years, I konw 2 of them (ASP.NET) and PHP.
I have never met or heard of a single programmer who is an "expert" in all three.
#2. You cannot find a programmer with all that experience and expertise for $10/hour - not even in India, Russia and China.
#3. You are very unlikely to need all these tecnologies for your website.
#3. You will probably get cheated by a malicious web developer "who knows" you don't know what you are talking about.
An analogy would be a doctor who is a dentist, surgueon and psychiatrist.
There might be one but you will have a very hard time hiring one for $10/hr.
Moral of this story:
Have a realistic expectation of your super web designer.
Know what you really need instead and focus on finding a web developer who knows exactly what you need.
